Intro: How would my friends describe me? The only way I know myself to have been
described is kind and loyal. Behind my back they probably describe me as a lousy
(but enthusiastic) golfer.
I was born In Houston Texas just after the end WWII. My father was in the Navy
and his ship got to the US for refitting In San Diego. Mom went out to visit him
and (as she said) with the intent of getting pregnant. An aside from my father
regarding that trip was “By God she SHOULD have been pregnant.” I’m convinced of
his best efforts and here I am.
After the war my father went to work for Creole Petroleum in Venezuela. I lived
in Venezuela from the time I was 3 until I was 14. I loved it. It was a
wonderful experience. I have many great memories of life in Venezuela and to
this day I have many friends from that time. I went to the US and lived with my
wonderful grandmother to go to high school. I spent my summers with my family in
Venezuela. I graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in
mathematics.
The only real job skills I got in college were computer skills. I was hired by
Bechtel Engineering, and I eventually became the Manager of Systems for Bechtel
Petroleum Corporation. While assigned to the San Francisco office I got my MBA
from UC Berkeley. After 17 years I left Bechtel and became an independent
consultant. I developed computer systems for various industries until I retired.
After retirement I
joined my wife in her business. She was an independent jewelry appraiser (very
well known in her industry), and I took over much of the work that did not
require her specialized expertise.
I have been married twice. My first wife, Carol, (to whom I was married for 20
years) and I are still good friends. Carol also became a good friend to my
second wife, Nancy. Nancy and I were married for 26 years until her death in
November of 2021.
I have traveled a lot in my life. I already mentioned Venezuela. I have been to
many of the countries of Europe, Libya, Indonesia, Singapore, and several
countries in Central America. I enjoy travel. I'm not really into camping. I am
more a luxury hotel and fine restaurants kind of guy. Cruises are nice. I like
to go some place and stay for a few days. I'm not into seeing ten different
cities in ten days unless it is a ten day river cruise or something where my
"hotel" moves with me. The two most beautiful
places I have ever been are Yosemite and Zermatt. I love the California coast. I have two timeshares at the
Highlands Inn in Carmel, CA, one in Sedona, AZ and one in Tucson, AZ. Two of my
most interesting vacation trips were 1) a week in Zermatt followed by a week
bicycling with friends through the Loire valley in France and 2) a 15-day
Windstar cruise from Venice to Barcelona.
For the last several years I have been the chief cook and bottle washer. My wife
cooked most of her life and after I retired she was happy to let me take over
the kitchen. We enjoyed dinners at home. We would watch movies or sometimes read
books or just talk in the evenings. We also enjoyed going out to some of our
favorite restaurants but, except for a few special dishes, Nancy preferred my
cooking.
I have rambled on for a while. Well, now you know something about me, and if you
got this far you were not completely bored. In a way you have met me. Would you
like for me to meet you?
